I’m venturing from my normal themed posts, because I recently watched Rocky, and wanted to share my opinions on it. There are so many fantastic themes and concepts that are in the movie, but my favorite is the idea that someone as like Rocky could rise up against the obstacles which life throws at him, the opposition he faced from those around him, and the steep path he faced ahead of him and rise to the top.
When you’re scaling the peak of a mountain, thousands of feet up in the air, and running out of oxygen, what’s the best way to set up camp for the night? Recently, I found that Yanko Design released a concept design called Nokia FIT, and I was very intrigued. The idea is very simple: a silicon material ring that will connect to your phone to call straight from your fingertip, or alert you if you are receiving one. Without thinking about the logistics of it, I was completely amazed with the aspirations which some people seem to be completely capable of following through on.
In what seems like recent years, we’ve seen the development of the smartphone, as well as bluetooths, glasses, and watches, where you can pick up the phone. The question is: where do we go from here? It seems like we’ve thought of everything in the ways of the phone. We even conquered the sci-fi reality that was laid out from many old TV shows. We can now answer a phone call by holding a watch up to our heads, just like captain Kirk did in Star Trek! So the answer to this question of what’s next, is in my opinion, quite simple: holograms.
Recently, I was amazed to find an idea of a mask that you can breathe into to make energy. I am a big advocate for renewable energy so I just love the thought that something so typical as breathing could charge your phone. Although it’s not currently available for purchase, I think that it’s perfectly feasible and will be out and functioning soon.

For a recent project, two of my friends and I have started working on an innovation project that focuses on alternative energy that comes from human power. It’s very interesting and I’d love if you could take a look at our blog and tell us how you feel about it.

“We are three tenth grade students at Fountain Valley High School and we’re all fascinated by science. Interestingly enough, however, this blog comes from our English class. Our English teacher, Mr. Theriault, challenged us to innovate something. We chose to innovate in science because that’s all of our fortes, and because we thought “What if the energy we use in everyday items wasn’t wasted.” So we set to work trying to create machines that power themselves, much like modern cars. This blog is the memoir of our progress, our failures, but overall, the journey. Please enjoy.”
Many of us have heard recently that Amazon has been seriously looking at the business of using autonomous drones to deliver small packages. Since I love all the new inventions that were always thought of as science fiction, I for one love the idea of this project. In the video, the amazon employee said that about 80% of the packages they deliver are under five pounds and can be carried by these devices. This stat really pointed out to me that this type of invention is not only awesome, but it’s reasonable too.
Even if it is reasonable for amazon and really cool, it raises the question of whether or not it would gain support to the mass population. This would be a difficult question to predict, as many people feel intruded by drones flying around their neighborhood, something that caused some controversy in the news recently. In my opinion, however, I think it would be really cool to have this basically nonstop delivery service which isn’t too limited by the delivery men’s work hours and swiftness. Like he said in the video, there could be as little as 30 minutes in delivery time. I’m also curious to see what you all think so please feel free to drop a comment!
Even though our generation will never have to seriously worry about this problem, somewhere down the road humans will have to start worrying about running out of something that we’ve taken for granted all of these years: fresh water. So I love it when I see a new invention that doesn’t need water. This dishwasher and cupboard combo, for example is something that is not only interesting to find out about, but also inspiring because of its tremendous benefit to the world’s water supply. Instead of water, it uses liquid carbon dioxide to clean the dishes. But not only does it cut down on water, but it cuts down on space needed for your dishes because it seconds as a cupboard, which can hold your dishes as your other dishes wash. Although people will at first be skeptical of it not using water, I think inventions like these will definitely start to shape modern kitchens.
As said in the following video, energy is one of the biggest problems on our planet right now. Although we have tons of fossil fuels that could last us a long time, inventing new forms of harvesting electricity is crucial in the next years to come. This teenager, Taylor Wilson, has provided some ingenious insight on how this energy crisis could be solved. He proposed an idea in this video of a safe nuclear power plant. This is extraordinary because so many nuclear power plants are extremely dangerous to the thousands of people around the plants, as seen in Japan a few years ago. I have loved to see and have been inspired by the numerous new ways in which renewable energy has been produced.
