The Future of Recyclable Materials

Isn’t it great when you’re eating your lunch and you find out that not only your napkin but your bag is made out of 100% recyclable material?  That’s all great, but when you look around how much stuff is made out of recyclable materials, and how much can be made into something else.  I think that the huge volume of things that can be made into other things is endless, but ultimately relies on creativity.  Although I feel creativity is currently being killed by schools, I think that there’s still a lot of opportunity for more ideas to come in the future which can result in new innovations that turn dumpster items into valuable products, even if it’s not valuable to you, it might be for somebody else.  So I would like to show you the following video just to show you that there is no end to the things you can make out of everyday objects.  The only thing that is limiting you is your own creativity.

The Curving Phone

Samsung's Galaxy Round.

Samsung’s Galaxy Round.

I’m sure that many of you have taken a look at Samsung’s new, round phone.  I’m also sure that you’ve taken a second look and wondered “who would possibly want that?”  In my opinion, that answer is very few people.  (Well that is assuming people don’t start doubling their phones as cereal bowls.)  The curved phone would most likely fit well in the palm of your hand and fit comfortably against your leg, in your jeans, but what about the curved display?  I really don’t think that it is necessary and it might even have some negative effects.  One of the key issues that I can see might be that the light would hit the face of the phone reflect at a weird angle, leaving a glare in your eyes.  Next, I think that just the curved appearance of the words and pictures might give us a headache trying to adjust your eyes to the displacement.  So overall, in my opinion there won’t be any huge takeover of curved smart phones anytime soon, we’ll probably stick with the traditional style for a long time, unlike the monarchy in pre-revolutionary France.

Glowing Light Rocks

These light up rocks might not change the world, but i wanted to share them with you because it is interesting to see all of the different types of lights being created, and some of which don’t even need a wall outlet. Hopefully this is inspiring to you.  http://www.wired.com/design/2013/10/these-glowing-crystals-are-like-legos-from-mars/

Wristify- An AC for Your Body.

WRISTIFY2

Besides the awesome look of this new wristband, it is the beginning of a new branch in heating and cooling technology, which would solve a lot of energy problems. Students at MIT have built a prototype that basically applies hot and cool bursts to your skin to get your temperature at the perfect degree. Their incentive for this is that huge Air Conditioning devices take up a lot of space and a lot of energy, so there’s nobody that would stop them from just heating and cooling the body itself. This is really smart to me, considering how hot our body is. It is insane to me that when we read the thermometer and we are around 98 degrees hot, we’re completely fine, where as if we were to touch something that hot, we’d have a lot of burns. SO it seems really easy to cool our temperature instead of what’s around it. This is a really interesting device and I’d love to see where this technology leads to in the future.

How a bad idea may lead to an invention.

goodiear

Many people might not realize the power of using a bad idea to make a great invention, and they might even laugh at the sound of it.  This method, however, can be extremely useful when utilized correctly.  How this would work is you would think of terrible or completely unreasonable idea and you either work to achieve that or alter it in a way that makes a reasonable idea.  For example, whoever came up with the idea to actually try to invent a watch with a phone was probably though of as crazy. But slowly over time, all of the touch screens, small chips, and other parts of the watch came together and someone put the puzzle pieces together to create a work of art.  This is being seen so much during the 21st century as all of these twentieth century science fiction devices are being made.  Just recently, the smart watch and google glass came out so now, what’s next?  Hopefully someone can come up with a crazy unreasonable idea which can lead to the next big thing.

The Galaxy Gear is here.

First of all, I would like to say how amazed I was when I saw that this actually came out.  Then, I saw this video and it really made me realize, again, how much science fiction has turned into reality in recent years and how inspiring that is to me.  One thing that I like to do is “fuel my brain” as my English Teacher taught me a time ago.  Basically, I search the internet for things that get my brain gears turning, and one thing I like to look at are new inventions.  And what I find is just amazing; there are just so many things out there that are inspiring and that are convincing me that pretty soon, there will be no such thing as science fiction.  Okay, maybe that’s a little much, but  I do encourage everyone to take a look around at all the new inventions coming out, the smart watches, for example, and let those inspire you to go on and do great things.

Solar Windows

I just recently discovered this new, revolutionary Solar Window when searching for new renewable energy technologies.  Basically, it creates energy while still allowing sunlight in, amongst other things.  Scientists apparently use a spray-on substance that contains the particles that absorb the sunlight, which means that it might spread more quickly than regular solar panels, if you can apply it to an existing window.  Another interesting fact that I learned was that the window lets in light waves, but reflects most heat energy that is exerted onto the window.

I think that although this a huge advancement in the solar energy absorption, it does present some issues.  Along with most new, renewable energy technologies, many people simply do not want to install them, because of either the price, or the amount of work.  Since most homes already have non Solar Windows, people don’t want to worry about changing out the windows because they think that they are fine how they are.  This idea of laziness also applies to most renewable energy technologies, as people just don’t feel the need to change their roofs or windows and they have little incentive.  So the main goal for renewably energy technicians should be to make these technologies cheap and efficient.  This way it would be more reasonable for people to buy and use it because they have the incentive of creating a lot of energy.  This new Solar Window technology, however, is genius and it will definitely have an impact on society in the future.

Finally, I would like to relate this invention to one of my later posts regarding bad ideas turning into great inventions.  Now, I am definitely not saying that this is a bad idea, but for the first person who suggested it when the project first started, people might have thought otherwise.  If we were to rewind just a decade or two, we could see how different technology was back then.  So I would like to thank all of the inventors out there that didn’t care if their ideas and inventions were “bad ideas” at the time, or ‘impossible’ ideas, because it’s those ideas that jumpstarted the technology boom that go us to where we are today.

Google Glass, and how it might affect society.

Google glass is a revolutionary idea in the area of communication, and it is definitely a recent invention that will change the world. The basic concept of the glasses is to allow people to use most of the basic functions that a phone would do and install them onto a wearable device. This raises the question, though, of how and when we will really start to see changes in the everyday society that we live in. Larry Page, CEO of Google, would like to envision a city where people will be walking around, wearing the glasses and effectively communicating with people, using the full capability of the glasses. There are many issues, however, that might delay this semi-utopian society that google is trying to create.

Glass

The first issue is that there are very few people in the world that would walk around outside, wearing the google glass. The first reason would be that of security. Depending on where you live, wearing a $1,500 device where everyone can see it may not be such a good idea. There is also a fashion issue that is tied in along with it. Although I wouldn’t be bothered by this, most people might not appreciate a large block on the outside of their oddly shaped glasses. Although both of these problems are fixable, and will probably be fixed in the near future, there still begs the question on when this will actually affect society.
It is difficult to imagine a current society where people will all be walking around with these devices, and that is most likely because it is very difficult for a new “trend” to emerge. Along with any other movement, it is very difficult to get a first follower. This is because nobody wants to be different from the crowd, mostly because nobody wants to be wrong or get judged harshly. So for this specific trend to get started there would need to be three major steps. The first would be that google drastically drops the price, eventually to the point where a close to median income person can afford it. Then, there would need to be famous celebrities who are seen promoting or wearing the glasses, further enticing skeptics. Finally, you would most likely need to see the few brave people who would dare themselves to wear the google glasses on the street, to the point where you would feel comfortable wearing it around without having to fear them getting stolen or broken. So this process would definitely take a long time, even up to a few years, especially because it would probably take a while for Google to drop the price.
Although change to society might not be in the near future, once Google Glass does fully take affect, there would be a lot of changes to the world around us, and there are some that seem good, and some that seem weird or harmful. The most obvious thing to come from this is that there will no longer be any awkward kids or adults who sit apart from everyone and talk to themselves, because everyone will be doing that. This may become an issue when you’re trying to have a conversation with someone and the glasses think that you’re talking to them, or if someone next to you is talking to their glasses, it raises the possibility that yours will react to them. The other big change to society would be distractions, and whether or not this invention will eliminate them, or add to them. This will completely depend on the capabilities of the glasses. In the beginning of their release, they will most likely only be equipped with basic functions such as texting, calling, and taking pictures. So in that case, it would drastically improve the situation in our society today of people constantly pulling out their phones to text or take pictures, isolating themselves from the rest of the world. However, it might also backfire on this issue as new developments in the software may occur, leading to new apps and distractions being added to the device. Many people may think that since these glasses would prevent you from looking down at your phone to play on these apps, that it would eliminate any threat of texting or playing when doing basic things, like driving. It has, however, been scientifically proven that you cannot multi-task and that when people think they are multi-tasking, they are actually switching from one task to the other. So eventually, these glasses may be an extreme harm to society if people decide to use them while driving and not focus on what is going on around them.
Despite the slightly negative possibilities, I do believe that Google Glass has a tremendous opportunity to change the world in a good way. As many have long dreamed of when watching futuristic science fiction movies or shows, we might now have the capability to be able to take pictures and send messages at the blink of an eye. People will also be able to finally look up from their mobile devices and enjoy the world around them, while at the same time taking care of their constant texting needs. I believe that this invention will be extremely beneficial to society and will be the next major turning point in communications, along with its possible sister invention, the google watch.
